Important Changes to Student Health Insurance

From Eric Stoffregen and the OHSU Student Health Advisory Board:
***
Here's the info about the health insurance changes for next year:

From 1999 to present, additional benefits had been added to the student health insurance plan that had gradually made the plan more expensive with the result that student health plan insurance rates were set to increase 19% for the upcoming ’09-10 year. To prevent such a large increase a lengthy discussion followed concerning ways to prevent such a large, almost prohibitively expensive change in rates. The following changes in plan provisions were approved by amendment and vote in committee in order to contain the insurance premium increase to a more modest 7%.

Changes in plan voted and approved by committee:

Deductible is going from $250.00 to $500.00

Out of pocket maximum increasing from $1,000.00 to $2,000.00(not including deductible)

Out of network deductible from $250.00 to $1,000.00

RX benefits from $0/$15/$25 to $5/$15/$25

These changes will be in effect for next school year (changes start Sept. 1st).

Why are they raising insurance rates when we're in a recession?!

$500 deductible! Is this a body shop or student health we're talking about?

Wow, why dont they just take away our insurance? Our insurance has to be one of the worst I have ever seen.

So let's see, our health care will now cost us twice as much in every way (unless we are out of network, in which case it will be four times as much - make sure you get sick nearby kids!). But, fortunately, although the rates still increase 7%, it could have been worse.

Does this deal seem worth it? Are you kidding me?? Heavy sarcasm intended. This is a horrible deal for students. Health insurance is a basic part of our benefits package and is now much less valuable.

First it was the March fee, now this...

Wow, no stipend increase and a HUGE increase in healthcare costs. Thanks OHSU. $500 deductible. You have got to be kidding me. Disgusting.

It is never explained why there is going to be a huge jump in rates. If all these add-ons have been occurring for years, why are we going to suddenly going to start being billed for it now???

This is great! No increase in stipend, I have to pay for March Wellness while I don't use it, and now increse in insurance! Couldn't be better!

How do we go about finding other insurance options? I can get private healthcare for half that cost! Who do we need to speak to and what needs to be done?
